The CART Laboratory is focused on the tumor treatment in radiation therapy and surgery.

The main activities of the laboratory are the planning and monitoring of the tumor treatment either in radiotherapy and particle therapy or in surgical interventions.

Dosimetry analisis of a hadrontherapy treatment
Research activities are focused on the optimization of integrated technologies for treatment planning and delivery in high precision radiotherapy treatments. Specific applications are also developed for the surgical tumor treatment, mainly focused in breast plastic and reconstructive surgery.

The use of 3D/4D biomedical imaging with soft tissue visualization, in combination with real-time non-invasive optical tracking technologies, is exploited to achieve optimal treatment planning and on-line treatment verification, in cooperation with leading clinical institutions at a national and international level. Specific attention is given to the problems of organ motion and soft tissue changes, as they significantly decrease the reliability of tumour targeting in high-precision irradiation. Algorithms for real-time data visualization and rigid/deformable registration with respect to the pre-operative plan are used, aiming at enhanced image quality in treatment planning and at accurate treatment verification.
The development of novel surgical methodologies and instrumentation is focused on the planning and monitoring of breast plastic and reconstructive surgical interventions, and on the surgical outcome assessment.
Optical tracking systems are used for the acquisition of patient's morphology for preoperative planning and postoperative follow-up, and for the intraoperative navigation and monitoring of the surgical maneuvers.
The goal of breast surgery innovation is to provide the surgeon with accurate and quantitative tools for a repeatable and better surgical outcome.
